Self-esteem as a noncognitive skill (I) : Relationship of bereavement experiences with pets and assumed-competence based on undervaluing others |
The low sense of assumed-competence based on undervaluing others is one of the aspects of self- esteem as a noncognitive skill. We predicted that past pet breeding experience and bereavement experience with pets may suppress the sense of assumed-competence, and at the same time, increase self-esteem in people. Responses were collected from a web survey conducted on 441 people. A comparison of the four competence types, which consisted of high and low assumed-competence and self-esteem scores, showed that only the“omnipotent type”had a high frequency of experience in breeding dogs, and only the“self-respective type”had a high frequency of bereavement with pets when they were under 16 years old. We opined that dog and human attachment may promote high self- evaluation, and sharing of experiences and feelings with family and friends about bereavement of pets may promote self-esteem as a non-cognitive skill. |
